In their Winter plumage, these birds are individually rather unremarkable, especially when, as is usually the case, they are viewed at great distance. Indeed, it was only on a walk with more experienced birdwatchers, equipped with telescopes, that we learned of their presence. However, they do seem very gregarious and as a group they can be quite spectacular. These pictures show a two small sections of a flock seen in November 2004 at Lymington - this time viewed at only moderate distance.
