In 2002, we discovered that some of our Black Headed Gulls were in fact Common Terns. In September 2003, a couple of Terns perched on the breakwater provided an opportunity for some better pictures and, guess what, it transpires that some of our Terns are not Common!
All static pictures will enlarge.

The Black Headed Gull looking on in the picture on the left provides a useful comparison with the two Sandwich Terns.
I think most parents will find it easy to imagine the communication going on between the juvenile and the adult!
Having watched the terns more closely, it seems that most are Sandwich Terns, the Common Tern being the less common of the two along this particular stretch of shore.
